Consmin is a leading manganese ore producer with mining operations in Australia and Ghana, and with headquarters in Jersey. Our principal activities are the exploration, mining, processing and sale of manganese ore.
We are the second largest manganese ore producer in the world by volume, with mining operations in Australia and Ghana and headquartered in Jersey. Our principal activities are the exploration, mining, processing and sale of manganese ore.
Manganese is an essential element in global growth. Over 90% of manganese ore worldwide is consumed in the carbon and stainless steel industry, the majority of which is processed initially into manganese alloys. It is an essential and non-substitutable input to steel making due to its alloying properties which improve toughness and hardness, and its ability to desulphurise steel and prevent oxidisation.
There are two key metallurgical applications for manganese ore. Manganese oxide ore, like that produced by our Australian operations, is essential for the production of certain alloys (such as silicomanganese and ferromanganese) used mainly in the production of steel to improve its hardness, abrasiveness and elasticity, as well as its surface condition when rolled. Approximately 87% of manganese ore worldwide is used in the production of carbon steel. Manganese carbonate ore, like that produced by our Ghanaian operations, is essential for the production of EMM, which is mainly used for the production of “200 series” stainless steel, a manganese‑rich stainless steel used as a substitute for higher‑cost nickel‑bearing grades of stainless steel. There are no substitutes for manganese ore in either of these applications.
Our wholly owned Jersey‑based subsidiaries, Pilbara Trading Limited (PTL) and Consolidated Minerals Trading Ltd (CMTL), market and sell our Australian and Ghanaian manganese ore, respectively.
